Day 19: Arusha - Nairobi

The team really appreciated the 5 o’clock sleep in and after packing the bags we were all treated to a hearty breakfast from the New Arusha Hotel kitchen. It was then off into the spectacular Tanzanian country side. Just a few kilometres outside Arusha we were graced by a breath taking view, we all could not let an opportunity like this pass and soon the team were off their bikes, trying to capture the beauty on film. It was then onto dirt roads and after the first few kilometres everyone had started to relax, allowing circulation back in the knuckles and a chance to take a look at Mount Kilimanjaro, which fortunate for us was not shrouded in clouds. After about a hundred kilometres we arrived at Namanga, the border post between Tanzania and Kenya. By now we have the border crossing process waxed, after getting our passports stamped, Les and Rob were off to go get the Carne’s processed, Paul went to go change some currency, this time from a licensed bureau de change and Craig busied himself in acquiring Kenyan Flag stickers. Grant’s job was to make sure the bikes did not get any lighter and Mark was approached by a reverend who had seen us on the news the night before and had come to give us his blessing and wish us the best of luck on our journey. Once through the border, it was a short drive to fill up and then just another hour’s drive to Jungle Junction, where our bikes are going to spend the weekend being serviced. We were warmly met by Chris, owner of Jungle Junction, and after running through various snags and breakages with him, Paul, Mark, Grant and Craig were off to try and find their final rabies vaccination. We look forward to a nice dinner and eagerly await tomorrow and our trip to the Masai Mara.

Mt. Kilimanjaro
Looking at the photo of Mt. Kili, reminds me of the group photo, with Kean in it, , of your summit, so many years ago. The same feeling of anxiety then, is with me now, but the beauty of that amazing African Queen, remains with me still.
