Nos Vies en Partage Foundation

In over 20 years of working in Sub-Saharan Africa, I have become very conscious of the plight of those people who do not benefit in any way from the economic growth being experienced in Africa.  Although in dire need, they are all too often overlooked.  This applies especially to the many neglected women and children in Africa.  In an effort to do something to alleviate their plight, as some of you may recall, I have over the years donned my leathers and undertaken charity motorbike rides to raise money.

Following a motorbike trip from Cape Town to Cairo in 2009 with my two sons and three friends, I decided, with some of my geologist colleagues, to conduct our annual Randgold Resources exploration trips on motorbikes with the aim of not only reviewing our exploration prospects across the African continent but to highlight the plight of those neglected people in the countries where we have operations.  In 2010 we traversed some of the most challenging areas in Africa and were successful in raising funds from, among others, our various service providers and suppliers.  One of my great friends and business colleagues, Mamadou Lamine Gueye from CSTTAO/Afrilog, came up with a name for our project of Nos Vies en Partage or Sharing Prosperity and so, with the generous support from our many friends and business partners, we were able to provide some relief and opportunity to the many needy people in the countries through which we rode, namely Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire.

In 2012, accompanied again by my two sons and three friends, I embarked on my next ride, departing from Bagshot in the UK across Europe to Budapest before backtracking along the Mediterranean coast to cross over into Morocco and from there, down through Western Sahara and Mauritania to the Senegalese border, where we met up with my colleagues who had started the initiative with me in 2010.  The combined Nos Vies en Partage / 3BOYZONBIKES team then travelled through Senegal and Mali, down to Bamako and from there to Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire to complete the African leg of our charity ride, raising and donating funds as we went. Those who wish to follow our past trips can do so via the www.3boyzonbikes.com blog which also hosts the logos of all our previous sponsors and the benefiting charities.

Through these adventures, and with support from people and companies like yourself and our various partners in business, we raised over US$300 000 in 2010 and over US$600 000 in 2012 - yes, unbelievably, almost US$1 million in total!  The best part is that the money collected went in its entirety to relieve suffering and to bring about positive changes in the lives of a whole lot of people in need, as the riders covered all their own costs and Randgold and our logistic partners provided the necessary support.  The numerous donations, detailed in the attached list, went to orphanages, schools, hospitals and the reconstruction of villages among others.  The reward we shared was the gratitude and joy of those needy people who received beds, classrooms, potable water, medicines, electricity  -  the list goes on.

Our upcoming charity adventure is designed to complete our circumnavigation of Africa by traveling from Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire via Benin, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, DRC, Angola and Namibia to Cape Town.  With the same objectives, this time we hope to surpass the funds raised on our previous trips.  I will be accompanied by my good friend Rob Alexander, his son-in-law Paul and friend Martin, as well as my younger son, Craig.  Grant, my elder son, will unfortunately not make it this time and although we are going to miss him, he will be helping with the logistics and planning side of things from Atlanta, Georgia.

Over the past year our Nos Vies en Partage initiative has been incorporated into a foundation by Randgold Resources and will be chaired by the company’s retiring board chairman, Philippe Liétard

This trip is scheduled to take place in June and I would like to encourage all our previous supporters and potential new ones to join us in raising funds for the Nos Vies en Partage Foundation and to spread its support across more countries.

Should you wish to follow this year’s charity ride, you may do so via our blog at www.3boyzonbikes.com. We will again be recognising all sponsors and charities by hosting their logos on the above website as well as on the Nos Vies en Partage website.

I thank you in advance for your support.  As in the past, our local Randgold management together with our supply chain and logistics partners, Afrilog and Freight Forwarders, will be contacting you for possible contributions and participation in this initiative.
